Wordpress blogs are very good with using the method you have described.

However there is no need to edit the global template with programs like drupal and joomla. While I can't speak for the others, very little fluff gets through. There are also many plugins out there to to specifically optimize these sites for search engine crawls. Using open source CMS helped me gain top rankings on local and regional searches.

Mitch, thanks for the comment. However, I believe this advice works with a hardcoded HTML site or a Wordpress blogs. Both require making sure things are properly structured. Oftentimes, you do have to modify the global template to get it just right. I wouldn't recommend relying on it in general as it can automatically include a lot of fluff that reduces the potency of your title tag.

That is good information for those who still have regular HTML sites.

While I still like getting my hands dirty, I don't have all the time in the world to mess with code, and I don't want to put my sites in the hands of clueless web designers.

That is why I use open source cms like wordpress and joomla. It takes out the hassle of meta tags, keywords, and titles. Plus you can edit your site from anywhere without any special programs.

You can set global meta tags and title and article meta tags and titles with out knowing any code what so ever.
